Foodshelves
Feeding body and soul

When families face serious economic challenges, their income after paying the bills may not stretch far enough for food. Single-income families, low-wage workers, new immigrants struggling to overcome language and other barriers, employees who are laid off, households hit by catastrophic illness—these are the people who turn to Keystone’s three foodshelves for assistance. This short-term service also serves as an entry point for helping families deal with underlying issues affecting self-sufficiency.

Food shelves and food banks across the country are experiencing increases in the number of people coming to us for help, people who might be working but just aren’t making enough money to keep up with rising costs.  Donations of food surplus and basic, nutritious foods are not keeping pace with these increases.  A recent segment from Bill Moyers Journal covered the current crisis in New York, but the story is also true in the Twin Cities and the rest of the country.

PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Keystone foodshelves help feed the hungry and people in crisis in Ramsey County. Food and other necessities are provided to families on an appointment basis, year-round. The backbones of the program are volunteers who staff the foodshelves and regular food donors, including area churches, businesses and individuals. Ethnic foods for immigrants and refugee families are especially needed.

FOOd drives and donations

Keystone Community Services relies on community support to supply over 90,000 pounds of food per month to people in need in our community. Food donated through food drives held by faith communities, schools, businesses, and civic organizations is a great help to our program.
