Meals on Wheels
Nutritious meals and friendly smiles
Seniors with health
problems and people with disabilities may find themselves homebound
temporarily or permanently. A hot meal and a visit from a Keystone
Meals on Wheels volunteer each weekday help many such individuals
remain living independently in their own home or apartment. Besides
meal delivery, the program ensures daily connection with the community
and a first-alert system for any new issues homebound seniors may
be experiencing.
PROGRAM SUMMARY
Over the noon hour, Keystone volunteers deliver
hot meals to the doors of seniors and individuals with disabilities
living in the Merriam Park, Midway, Macalester-Groveland, Como Park
and St. Anthony Park neighborhoods of St. Paul. The program ensures
that frail seniors and other homebound individuals receive a nutritious
meal as well as daily contact with a friendly volunteer.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
- Meals Drivers
- Meals on Wheels drivers are a lifeline to the
greater community for the Meals on Wheels recipient. Volunteers
deliver meals once a week, every other week, or once a month,
depending on their availability. They may go alone, or with a
partner. Meal pick-up and route directions for 10 to 12 recipients
are provided at Merriam Park Community Center. Delivery take about
an hour over the noon hour, Monday through Friday. A car, valid
driver's license, and current auto insurance are necessary. Training
and assistance are provided.
- Forming a Team
- A team of people from the workplace, church, school,
club, or community organization may be formed to deliver meals.
Using teams, delivery responsibility is rotated. Teams provide
flexibility, built-in substitutes, a common bond, and a "working
together" experience. Team sizes range from 2-15 people.
