Urban Business Adventures
Young people need real-world experiences in order to actively develop the skills and habits for success in the workforce. Through apprenticeships at Urban Business Adventures, youth gain a valuable "first job" experience that emphasizes positive work skills, business knowledge, and the entrepreneurial mindset.
Apprenticeships take place at Express Bike Shop. Each apprenticeship is a paid ($7.25/hr), 200-plus hour experience consisting of three elements: curriculum, coaching, and assessment. Youth typically work 10-15 hours per week and complete the following components over the course of several months:
● 50-hour business skills certification
● 50-hour certification in bicycle repair
● 100 hours integrated work experience with coaching
● Assessments to measure engagement and learning
● Final challenge and graduation ceremony
Youth apprentices develop a sense of ownership of the businesses by designing merchandise displays, assisting customers, tracking inventory, managing social media outreach, coordinating special events, and creating business plans for new enterprises. As a result of their apprenticeship, youth are more prepared to compete and succeed in the work place as they approach adulthood.
