Couple puts the "active" in Active Seniors
At least three days a week, Sandy and Herb can be found at Keystone Community Services, enjoying the many offerings of the Active Seniors Program and extending a friendly hello to newcomers and regulars alike. In fact, at the frequent Active Seniors parties, the couple always makes an effort to sit with someone they don’t know.
Sandy and Herb learned of the Keystone Active Seniors Program when they volunteered with the Midway Kiwanis years ago, helping with Keystone’s foodshelf program and adopting a family through Keystone’s holiday program. In retirement Sandy broke her shoulder, which affected her balance, so the couple began coming to the Active Seniors walking group for exercise. “The walking group is so cheerful,” Sandy says. “After we walk, we enjoy sitting and talking with everyone.” The couple also gets flu shots, enjoys putting puzzles together and lifts weights at Keystone. “Walking doesn’t do it,” Sandy says. “When we lift weights we use our back, arms, and legs.”
Sandy and Herb could attend senior activities at another location closer to home, but they love the Keystone program. “We really enjoy it here. Herb (a Navy veteran) really likes his social time with the other guys,” she said. Sandy and Herb invite all the seniors nearby to visit and meet the people of the Keystone Active Seniors Program.
